WHY I WROTE THESE BOOKS THE WAY I DID....
A number of years separate the Bar Code Tattoo and The Bar Code Rebellion from The Bar Code Prophecy. Time passed, things changed. Readers clamored for a third book. Technology advanced...and individual privacy was even more compromised than ever. I decided to enter a new lead character, Grace Morrow (grace tomorrow). But Kayla and Mfumbe are not gone. They're leading the Rebellion now. At first I wanted to call this The Bar Code Chip because it seems to me that's coming. (Go to The Bar Code Trilogy page on Facebook to see a chilling video about this.) In this novel Grace must overcome her complacency in a pro Bar Code world to see what's really going on her life. |
The cover of the German translation of The Bar Code Tattoo. In Germany it was short-listed for the prestigious Jugenliteraturpreis (The Youth Literature Prize).
Grace's boyfriend was added to the cover of the paperback edition. I was glad because there are a number of strong male characters in the stories and boys like the trilogy as much as girls do.

THE BAR CODE REBELLION
"In a world where every seventeen year old is tattooed with a "bar code," which is used for virtually everything, there are many who believe that this convenient identification system holds life threatening data. There is a secret surrounding the Bar Code nanotechnology so ghastly that anyone who discovers it is eliminated. In this futuristic novel, Kayla and her friends are members of a group known as the Bar Code Resistance, and they will not stop until they discover what that secret is. When a commercial advocating for the Bar Code airs starring a teenager who freakishly resembles Kayla, the strangeness has only just begun...Suzanne Weyn's poignant exploration into the technological future will draw many curious readers into her wonderings of the not-to distant world to come. The Bar Code Rebellion has an intriguing plot line that will keep the readers turning page after page. ---Children's Literature - Jeanna Sciarrotta--- |
REVIEWS:
THE BAR CODE TATTOO This is a great book, one that reminded me of one of my favorites, Feed by M.T. Anderson, though a little less futuristic. It would be an excellent tie-in to discuss contemporary issues of proposed US I.D. cards and civil rights, as well as corporate domination and centralization of ownership. Students will enjoy the multilayered story lines and some students will recognize the similarities to the book of Revelation, which, if you read the author's note, inspired the title. A frightening book. Sarah Applegate, Libn., River Ridge H.S., Lacey, WA / KLIATT ONLINE REVIEW |
